Get Answers About Your Construction Project

  • Do I need a permit for a new garage in Calgary?

Yes, building permits are required for new garage construction in Calgary and surrounding municipalities. Permit requirements typically include structural plans, site plans showing property lines and setbacks, and compliance with local zoning bylaws.

Grey Eagle Home Improvement handles permit applications as part of our garage construction service. Processing times vary by municipality but generally take 4-8 weeks. We coordinate inspections throughout the build to ensure your project meets all code requirements.

  • Are roofing permits required in Alberta?

Most roofing replacement projects in Calgary and Alberta require building permits, particularly for complete roof replacements or structural modifications. Simple repairs often don't require permits, but it's best to verify with your local municipality. Permit requirements ensure work meets current building codes for wind resistance, fire ratings, and proper ventilation.

Homeowners insurance may also require permitted work for claims coverage. Contact your local building department or Grey Eagle Home Improvement to determine if your roofing project needs a permit.

Project Planning & Timing

  • What's the best time of year for roofing work in Calgary?

Spring through fall offers the most reliable conditions for roofing work in Calgary. Warmer temperatures help shingles seal properly, and dry weather prevents installation delays. However, roofing emergencies don't wait for ideal weather. Winter installations require additional precautions but remain possible for urgent repairs.

If you're planning a non-emergency replacement, scheduling between May and October typically provides the best conditions and faster project completion.

  • How long does it take to build a custom garage?

Custom garage construction timelines depend on size, complexity, weather, and permit processing. After permits are approved, typical construction takes 4-8 weeks for a standard detached garage. This includes foundation work, framing, roofing, electrical rough-in, siding, and finishing.

Larger garages with workshop features or complex designs may take longer. Winter construction can extend timelines due to weather delays.

  • Can you work on my project during winter?

Yes, many construction projects can proceed during Calgary winters with proper planning. Roofing repairs, interior renovations, and some exterior work remain possible in cold weather. However, concrete work, certain foundation repairs, and some outdoor projects may need to wait for warmer temperatures.

We assess each project individually to determine the best timing. Emergency repairs proceed regardless of season.

Materials & Warranties

  • What roofing materials work best in Alberta's climate?

Alberta's extreme temperature swings, hail exposure, and high winds require durable roofing materials. Architectural shingles rated for high wind and impact resistance perform well in Calgary conditions. For flat roofs, EPDM, TPO, and modified bitumen systems offer different advantages depending on your building's specific needs. Metal roofing provides excellent longevity but costs more upfront.

We assess your roof's pitch, exposure, and your budget to recommend materials that balance performance and value.

  • What warranty coverage comes with your roofing work?

Our roofing projects include manufacturer warranties on materials plus our workmanship guarantees. Qualifying installations receive a 25-year extended Golden Pledge warranty covering both materials and labour. We also offer a 15-year system warranty option. Warranty coverage depends on materials selected and installation specifications. Regular maintenance and proper attic ventilation help maintain warranty validity.
